THE Limpopo government has encouraged the protection of the elderly people in rural areas who often face discrimination, neglect and abuse.
This comes as the province is celebrating the International Month for Older Persons, which took place on Sunday, 1 October.
The plea was made by Social Development MEC Nandi Ndalane.
Ndalane emphasised the importance of recognising the wisdom, knowledge, and traditions that rural older persons possess.
The MEC also acknowledged their significant contributions in building families and nurturing communities.
But she expressed concern that older people in rural areas often face discrimination, neglect, and abuse.
“This violates their basic human rights and goes against the principles of justice and equality. I call upon the people of Limpopo to use this month as an opportunity to uphold and protect the rights of older persons, especially in rural areas,” she said.
Ndalane said that this is why they're calling for the protection of the rights of older people, especially in rural areas.

“This month serves as a reminder to honour and appreciate the contributions and experiences of older persons in our society. They're the greatest assets in society, and their wisdom is key to guidance in life,” she said.
The MEC said that the elderly should be enlightened about their human rights and be provided with valuable information and guidance.
Chairman of the Limpopo Older Persons Forum, Dr Solomon Nchabeleng, said the need to protect and promote the rights of elderly is vital.
He also highlighted the challenges older people face due to the high unemployment rate, which puts pressure on their old age grant.
“I urge the government to increase the grant to R3 000, as this would alleviate the burden on their financial resources,” he said.
