GOING for a simple haircut in Majazana near Orange Farm, south of Joburg, could potentially put your life in danger.

This is because a gang of armed men is targeting hair salons in the area.

In the last three weeks, about three salons have been hit by the gang and a total of 18 cellphones were forcibly taken from their rightful owners at gunpoint. Two people were also shot and wounded in two salons.

One was shot in the face, while the other one was shot in the head.

Bennet Sithole told Daily Sun they were attending to clients when a group of men came into the salon on Saturday, 13 August. He said they posed as customers and after they let their guard down, the three men drew firearms and robbed everyone in the salon.

“They ordered us to lie on the floor, took phones and some money and demanded a key from one lady who had parked her car outside,” he said.

Bennet Sithole was robbed along with his customers on Saturday.

He said after failing to take the car, they damaged the door handles and fled.

Bino Pelembe (24) from another salon, said they were also hit last month. “When we knocked off that day, a car was parked outside. When we got into the car, they came and blocked us from reversing. Five heavily armed men got out of their car, came to ours and demanded that we open the car,” he said.

He said that when his brother refused to open the car, they fired shots and they got out and fled.

Bennet said he called the police the day after the robbery, but they never came.

The other victims said they didn’t bother opening cases because they have no faith in the De Deur police.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo urged the public to report incidents of crime.
