TSHWANE Mayor Cilliers Brink is not giving up on making sure residents get service delivery.

But the torching of trucks by thugs is making matters worse in the city.

Brink said Tshwane was making good progress with its catch-up plans.

"Unfortunately, in the past 24 hours, two waste removal trucks have been torched, one belonging to a contractor with the city and the other not to the city.

"We saw before a third truck was torched at the beginning of the strike two were stoned, and one forced to dump its rubbish," said Brink.

The mayor said it's important for residents to realise that it's an extension of criminality against the city.

"Obviously, if we have such incidents, we can withdraw contractors to do waste collection.

"This is no longer a labour dispute. This is a criminal assault on a massive scale," Brink said.

He said the city manager is meeting the police and security services to ask for assistance and find out who is driving this criminal action.

"There will be criminal and personal liability. We remain committed to residents in catching up on our services and not giving up.

"The municipal workers have been on strike for almost a month now," Brink said.

Precious Theledi, regional secretary of the South African Municipal Workers Union in Tshwane, said: "As far as I know, there is no strike in Tshwane."

Brink will brief the media regarding the violent and criminal strike at Tshwane House on Wednesday, 30 August.
