IN recent weeks, a series of attacks on cyclists in and around Pretoria East, Midrand, and Joburg North districts have raised concerns among clubs, riding groups, and cyclists.
A warning issued and shared on social media advises that the area between Irene Redbarn and the R21 road is off-limits due to the number of highjacking of cyclists being extremely high.
The warning comes after 57-year-old cyclist Freddy Strydom was stabbed in the back by thieves who stole his bicycle.
Last Saturday, 11 November, three men attacked a resident of Midstream Estate, who was cycling with a group of 12 people between the R21 and M18 in Centurion.
Strydom was at the rear of the group when the robbers pushed him from his bicycle and stabbed him before making off with his bicycle.
According to Strydom's daughter Rene Le Grange, the other riders heard screams and they turned around and saw Strydom bleeding on the ground. She said the cyclists noticed three men with the bicycle running into the bushes.

Due to the location being off route, an ambulance couldn't reach Strydom, prompting fellow cyclists to send out an SOS to their group. A car was sent to take him to the hospital.
“The group was out on a typical date morning ride together, departing from midstream properties, riding between the M18 and R21. They were coming from the off-road. My father reported that he felt a forceful blow to his back, upon rising, he saw that someone had taken his bicycle. He then collapsed to the ground, whereupon he realised he was bleeding profusely. His team informed him that he had been stabbed,” said Le Grange.
She said that since the attack occurred from behind, and other bikers didn't witness it, her dad wouldn't be able to identify the culprits.
Cyclist Letshego Zulu advocated for cyclist safety amid the rising attacks.
"The government should ensure that cyclists are adequately protected on public roads, with more visibility and safety enforcement patrols,” she said.
The incident has raised concerns about cyclist safety, prompting calls for increased protection on public roads, including more visibility and safety enforcement patrols.
Police have confirmed the opening of a robbery case at the Olifantsfontein cop shop, with investigations underway.
"There has not yet been an arrest, however investigations are underway,” said Gauteng police spokesman Mavela Masondo.
Cyclists are advised to exercise caution and avoid the specified area due to the heightened risk of attacks.
