TWO TRENCHES in Etwatwa, Ekurhuleni, have been left open for over three months, and children are always loitering around it.
Some even attempted to swim in them. Luckily, the children were seen in time and were chased away.
Residents fear the rainy season is coming, and this hole could swallow their children.
Resident Joseph Makhathini said the two trenches were left by the municipal workers who came to fix the water pipe in their area some time ago.
"We fear this will swallow our children one day," he said.
Residents say they reported it several times but see no one has come to fix it.

"Anything can happen. Not only children but a motorist can also some day lose control and land there. It doesn't bother them because they don't live around here. Kids are kids. It's difficult to monitor them," said a resident.
Residents said this wasn't the first time.
"Each time they do a project, we either clean after them or complain about the mess they leave behind. I don't know why they can't do a complete job. This is a residential area. We need space where we can walk freely, and our children can play freely," Diana Ngobeni said.
A spokesman for the City of Ekurhuleni, Zweli Dlamini, said they were unaware of the trenches and would send municipality workers to fix the problem.
