VETERAN ANC hardliner Tony Yengeni has been told to stay away from the ANC Veterans League conference being held this weekend!
After initially being invited as a "special guest", Yengeni was told "you are only to attend the closure of the conference".
It's not clear why the invitation was withdrawn or what Yengeni had hoped to achieve at the conference - whether it be election to an office-bearing post or just participation.
The Veterans League conference is due to get underway on Friday, 28 July, at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni, and end on Sunday, 30 July is to elect new leadership.
Initially, Yengeni was invited to attend the conference as a special guest from the opening to the closing. He was even requested to indicate his availability.
A letter dated 25 July 2023, signed by Susan Shabangu, the deputy co-ordinator of the conference read: “The National Convenor of National Task Team is inviting you to attend the Conference of the ANC Veteran League as a special guest.”

But a subsequent letter from Baby Tyawa, ANC Veteran member, sent on 27 July, read: “Dear Cde Tony, Update on attendance of the veterans league conference, as per my communication to your good-self, I wish to amend this by advising that you are only to attend the closure of the conference which is scheduled for Sunday 30 July 2023, with the former NEC members invited, Inconvenience caused is regretted. Kind regards Cde Baby Tyawa.”
Yegeni, who was convicted of fraud in 2003 after getting a discount on a luxury vehicle, was also arrested for drunk driving, but the case was dismissed when it emerged that the blood sample taken from him had been tampered with.
The former ANC chief whip recently had a spat with the party’s secretary-general Fikile Mbalula, who labelled him ungovernable and told him he had an issue with alcohol.
