SHOPPERS were left in shock after witnessing a horrific scene where cops were in a shoot-out with robbery suspects.

The armed robbers entered a loan facility at Mall@Lebo in Lebowakgomo, Limpopo, on Wednesday, 13 March, to steal cash.

The robbers broke into the store and entered through the ceiling, where they allegedly held workers hostage.

Shoppers said it was like a movie scene when police arrived as the situation escalated into a shoot-out.

“It was like we were in a movie, and everyone feared for their lives. I had never seen something like that, and the mall had to be closed. Everyone was asking if their loved ones working at the mall were safe, and I’m happy with how the police reacted,” said the shopper (34).

According to preliminary reports, cops responded to a call of an armed robbery in progress at a local cash loan facility.

Police spokesman Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said one of the suspects used a firearm to break into the ceiling where they hid in the wall units.

“The national intervention and Limpopo TRT units were activated and initiated a building penetration in the roof, and the two suspects, aged 27 and 36, were arrested with two firearms,” he said.

Ledwaba said one suspect sustained injuries during the shoot-out and was taken to hospital under police guard for medical attention.

“Both suspects are currently in custody and face charges of armed robbery, seven counts of attempted murder, six counts of malicious damage to property and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition,” he said.

They're expected to appear in the Lebowakgomo Magistrate Court in due course while police investigations are ongoing.

“The courageous and tactical response by the cops ensured that no civilians were harmed during the exchange of fire,” Ledwaba said.
