THREE taxi rank managers have been shot dead.

The men were seated on the side of the road when a silver VW Polo arrived and the occupants opened fire towards them in Newlands, Durban on Thursday, 11 January.

Three died at the scene, while seven others sustained injuries.

The shooting happened opposite a busy taxi rank and a mall, and most of the shoppers were shocked.

A shopper told Daily Sun that she was arriving at the mall when she heard the gunshots.

“I immediately jumped back into my car. The shots continued being fired but I waited for the shooting to end, and then I went out. Two men were lying on the side of the road, bleeding. Others were at the back of the container they were sitting next to,” she said.

Another shopper said he had just driven past the men seated next to the road when he heard the gunshots.

“I’m still shaking because maybe I could have been hit by a stray bullet as I drove past them,” he said.

The Greater North Region Taxi Association spokesman, Themba Kubheka, said he can't say anything about the incident yet but confirmed that the incident happened in their area.

KZN police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Netshiunda said cops have launched a manhunt for an unknown number of suspects who shot and fatally wounded three people and injured at least seven others in an apparent drive-by shooting in Newlands.

“Information available at this stage suggests that the victims were sitting on the side of Ntuzuma Express Road opposite a mall when a silver VW Polo arrived and the occupants of the vehicle opened fire at the victims, fatally wounding the three at the scene. The injured victims were rushed to a local clinic," said Netshiunda.

He said the motive of the shooting is unknown at this stage and said taxi-related violence could not be ruled out in the attack.
