ABOUT three million people have registered to vote, with Gauteng leading the way.
This is according to Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) chief electoral officer, Sy Mamabolo, who was speaking during a press conference in Centurion, Tshwane on Monday, 20 November.
Mamabolo said during the Voter Registration Weekend on November 18 and 19, the IEC interacted with 2,9 million voters, with 2,7 million visiting physical stations and 196 000 opting for online registration.
He said first-time eligible voters accounted for 568 000.
“Illegible voters registering for the first time were 568 000, this accounts for 19,57% of the total registration activity,” he said.

Mamabolo said voters who registered in the same voting district were 1,4 million and those who voted in different stations were 929 000.
“In other words, they were people who were changing their address details,” he said.
Gauteng, KZN, and the Eastern Cape recorded the most registration transactions, with young people aged 16 to 29 making up 78.31% of new voters, predominantly young women.
"The commission’s continued focus on young persons and is producing a good yield. The commission will persist with efforts to improve the registration levels of the youth.
“The well-entrenched trend of there being more females on the voters’ roll continues. Of the new registrations, 298 500, or 52,52% were female,” he said.
The voters roll increased to 26,8 million voters which is an increase from 26,3 million before the weekend.
