THE IEC held another successful by-election in several provinces across the country on Wednesday, 14 February.

This is where the IFP won the fiercely contested Ward 2 in the Uphongolo Municipality in northern KZN.

It retained the ward amid a severe challenge by the newly unveiled uMkhonto weSizwe Party, backed by former president Jacob Zuma and the ANC.

According to the IEC, the new councillor for Ward 2 is Vusumuzi Reaan Buthelezi, under the Uphongolo Municipality.

The party retained the seat it won in the 2021 municipal elections, with 36,39% of the total votes cast, compared to 48,37% during the 2021 municipal elections.

Voter turnout was 50,14%.

Still in KZN, a new councillor, Ntokozo Innocent Mdluli, was voted in at Ward 11 Newcastle Municipality.

“The party won a seat previously won by the ANC in the 2021 municipal elections, with 49,75% of the total votes cast compared to 38,11% during the 2021 municipal poll. Voter turnout yesterday was 52,26%,” said IEC.
