THE IEC held another successful by-election in several provinces across the country on Wednesday, 14 February.
This is where the IFP won the fiercely contested Ward 2 in the Uphongolo Municipality in northern KZN.
It retained the ward amid a severe challenge by the newly unveiled uMkhonto weSizwe Party, backed by former president Jacob Zuma and the ANC.
According to the IEC, the new councillor for Ward 2 is Vusumuzi Reaan Buthelezi, under the Uphongolo Municipality.
The party retained the seat it won in the 2021 municipal elections, with 36,39% of the total votes cast, compared to 48,37% during the 2021 municipal elections.
Voter turnout was 50,14%.
Still in KZN, a new councillor, Ntokozo Innocent Mdluli, was voted in at Ward 11 Newcastle Municipality.
“The party won a seat previously won by the ANC in the 2021 municipal elections, with 49,75% of the total votes cast compared to 38,11% during the 2021 municipal poll. Voter turnout yesterday was 52,26%,” said IEC.

New ANC councillors were also elected in two municipalities in the Free State and North West.
The Commission said Aaron Macio was voted in Ward 11 in the Nala Municipality, while Levy Ramatlhape was elected in Ward 7 in the Madibeng Municipality.
The party retained both seats they won during the 2021 municipal elections.
The DA also won two seats in separate municipalities in Gauteng and the Western Cape.
Martha Hendrina Beukes was elected councillor in Ward 25 in the Ekurhuleni Municipality, and Johnathan Smit was elected in Ward 10 in the Theewaterskloof Municipality in the Western Cape.
The Patriotic Alliance also emerged victorious when Samuel Christie Vorster was elected as the new councillor in Ward 8, George Municipality in the Western Cape.
IEC said the party won a seat previously won by the DA in the 2021 municipal elections, with 62,75% of the total votes cast compared to 36,63% during the 2021 Municipal Elections, and voter turnout was 54,29%.
