THE EFF has won its first ever ward in the Western Cape.
The community of ward 9 in Saldanha Bay turned against the ANC and voted EFF member Mthobeli Twala as their councillor in the by-elections held in the area.
“EFF would like to thank the community of ward 9 in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape, for voting for EFF Councillor Mthobeli Twala. Indeed, the Western Cape is the home of the EFF, and it is ready to deliver decisive victory in 2024!” said the party on Thursday, 7 December.
The EFF got 57% and the ANC received 43% of the vote.
The ANC seems to be on the decline in the Western Cape and this could spell danger for the party in the upcoming national elections next year, but the ruling party did well in Mkhambathini, KZN, ensuring it retained ward 7.

ANC spokesman in KZN Mafika Mndebele said the results proved that people still have confidence in the party.
He said: “Thousands of people voted overwhelmingly for the ANC in Ward 7, Mkhambathini Local Municipality. Consequently, a dark cloud is hanging over the weak and ill-conceived Multi-Party Charter as we head towards the general elections.”
Mndebele said they have long stated that the Multi-Charter was nothing but a marriage made in hell with a desire to return KZN into a modern Bantustan.
“With the Economic Freedom Party being of no significance, we wish to announce the walloping of the IFP, DA and ActionSA in particular in this by-election.” said Mndebele.
The ANC received 1 465 votes, while EFF got 213 Votes and the IFP came third with 152 votes.
The DA and ActionSA got 0 votes.
