ECONOMIC Freedom Fighters from Thabo Mofutsanyana region in the Free State has opened a criminal case against an ANC councillor trending on social media, seemingly exhuming the dead body of a 31-year-old man.

The case was opened at Tsheseng Police Station on Wednesday, 6 December.

The incident allegedly happened on Sunday, 3 December, at Mangaung Village QwaQwa, a day after the deceased's burial service.

The alleged perpetrator is an ANC councillor at Ward 15 in Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality.

EFF accused the ANC councillor of a violation of a grave, violation of a dead body and unlawful digging of a grave which they believe was double trauma to the deceased family as they tragically lost their loved ones in a car crash.

According to EFF Member of the National Task Team, Chico Mkhwanazi, the councillor accused the family of burying their corps on top of the municipality water pipes.

"The councillor was seen digging a grave daylight. He has no right to exhume a dead body without a court and relevant government department. We viewed the matter as a serious criminal offence. The deceased family has suffered double trauma. We called on the provincial police commissioner to apprehend him with immediate effect," he said

Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring has confirmed that a case violation of a graveyard was opened at Tsheseng Police Station.

ANC provincial spokesman Jabu Mbalula said the executive committee hasn't received a formal report from the municipality and local structures.

"Every municipality has its regulations on where the graveyard should be located. We will make an official statement with full details after a formal report is brought to us," he said.
