PRISON escapee, Facebook rapist and murderer Thabo Bester has requested that the Free State High Court facilitates on the best way to find him food.

Bester told the court he didn't eat breakfast in the Grootvlei Maximum Prison where he was kept for pre-trial because the food that was served doesn't align with his diet due to his sugar diabetes.

Bester, his girlfriend Dr Nandipha Magudumana and six accused appeared in court on Wednesday, 21 February for the much-anticipated pre-trial.

"I propose to the court to make a provision for me to have diabetic accommodative food. I've never eaten at Grootvlei because of the food that is served there.

"I'm not on a hunger strike. I'm hungry. I'm living with my diabetic medication. Unfortunately, I couldn't drink it. I'm going to travel back to Kgosi Mampuru on an empty stomach," he said.

This is the second time Bester complained about food in the prison.

During his first appearance, after his apprehension in Tanzania, Bester requested the Bloemfontein court to make a ruling that he should receive food through his legal representative and not at the prison. Addressing the high court during the delayed pre-trial, Bester slammed the Department of Correctional Services.

"The department has denied me an opportunity to access legal representation. I was denied a phone to arrange with my lawyers. They decided to drop me because I had no means of communication in the prison. I only met my new lawyer when I arrived in Bloemfontein for pre-trial," said Bester.

The state prosecutor, Advocate Amanda Bester, said those are the competence of Department of Correctional Services. Following overwhelming social media criticisms about Bester's expensive clothes during his court appearances, the court prohibited him of wearing them.

All the accused, Senohe Matsoara, Zolile Sekeleni, Teboho Lipholo,Motanyane Masukela, Dr Nandipha Magudumana, Tieho Makgotsa, Joel Makhetha and Zimbabwean Foreign national Zanda Moyo, were in court ready for trial.

The accused were charged with fraud, corruption, arson, assisting a convicted prisoner to escape from lawful custody, defeating the end of justice, violation of a corpse amongst others.

The case has been postponed to Wednesday, 5 June.
