A tanker explosion has led to a road closure on the N2 north.

A TANKER explosion led to a road closure on the N2 North near Edwin Swales Drive in south of Durban, KZN on Sunday, 24 December.

This after a truck carrying petrol and diesel exploded after a rear tyre burst while enroute.

Road Traffic Inspectorate spokeswoman, Sindi Msimang said the driver of the truck said the trailer had a rear tyre burst which seemed to have caused the explosion.

She said it exploded because it conveyed multiple loads of fuel and diesel.

Msimang said fortunately the driver was unharmed and the fire was extinguished.

Meanwhile, Gareth Jamieson of ALS Paramedics said they responded to a call to help and on arrival, paramedics found multiple fire engines on the scene tackling the blaze.

“ALS Paramedics were shown to the driver who had sustained minor injuries. He was stabilised on the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital,” he said.

The northbound lanes of the highway have been completely closed off by authorities, while the southbound lanes were open, but subjected to significant delays.
