TWO men aged 36 and 39 were allegedly burned to death on Saturday, 30 December.

This happened after the community suspected the men of stealing cattle in the area.

Mpumalanga Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Semakaleng Manamela, has strongly condemned the incident in which residents are taking the law into their own hands.

The victims were discovered by residents who informed the police. One victim was inside the burnt blue Nissan bakkie, and another was lying outside the vehicle.

The gruesome murder happened at around 8:30am in the village of Hlalakahle in Masoyi outside White River near Nelspruit, Mpumalanga.

"Vigilantism will never be a solution to crime. We urge communities to work hand in hand with us on crime issues. You can't fix a wrong with another offence," Manamela said.

She reiterated her call for all criminal activities to be reported to the police so that they can be properly investigated and fairly prosecuted.

Brigadier Selvy Mohlala confirmed that the police were called to the scene.

"When they arrived, they found one of the deceased lying outside the vehicle while the second body was found inside a burnt-out vehicle. The victims were unfortunately pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. Police have since launched an investigation to find out who may have been involved in the gruesome murders," Mohlala said.

He said information from preliminary investigations indicate that the victims were murdered after a stock theft allegedly occurred in the area.

All information received will be treated in confidence and callers can choose to remain anonymous.
