LAW enforcement officers arrested a man suspected to be a cop during a hijacking incident in the early hours of Tuesday morning, 27 September.
MMC for Safety and Security Jean-Pierre Smith said law enforcement officers on patrol in the CBD saw a hijacking in progress at a petrol station on Buitengracht Street, Cape Town, at about 3am.
Officers moved swiftly and used their vehicle to block the hijacked car, a white Polo Vivo, arresting the suspect behind the wheel.
Three other suspects in a silver Polo managed to escape.
“The arrested suspect is believed to be a detective at Rondebosch SAPS. Information is being followed up by officials,” said Smith.
He said corrupt cops must be dealt with because they were going against their duty to protect the public.
“We cannot hold criminals to account if we cannot hold ourselves to account. If any police or enforcement official is proven to have been involved in any form of criminal conduct, they must be prosecuted and face the full might of the law,” said Smith.
Police spokesman Colonel Andre Traut said they were still establishing more information about the 28-year-old suspect.
He confirmed the hijacking, but he couldn’t confirm whether the accused person is a cop or not, as the matter was still under investigation.
