University of Pretoria student Thapelo Menwe was killed last Saturday, 10 September.

FAMILY members of a student who was killed outside a university residence are still struggling to accept their loss.

University of Pretoria student Thapelo Menwe (23) was gunned down in the early hours of Saturday morning, 10 September.

His uncle Patrick Ntheledi told Daily Sun the family was not coping.

“It has not even been three months since he got his degree, and was still busy with his honours,” he said.

Patrick said the police arrested two suspects, but that didn’t change what happened.

“The support we are getting from people is much appreciated,” he said.

Thapelo’s younger brother, Tshepo (19), struggled to speak.

“It is really hard to accept this. We’re hurt as the family,” he said.

Rikus Delport of the university said the incident was caught on CCTV.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo said: “The suspects, aged 38 and 33, appeared in the Pretoria Magistrates Court on Monday, 12 September for murder, armed robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

“They will be back in court on 19 September.”

Thapelo will be laid to rest in Zeerust, North West, tomorrow.
