SPEED is often a major factor in vehicle collisions in Mzansi.

In a bid to save lives during the festive season, the Department of Transport and Community Safety in Limpopo has charged and fined 2 377 drivers for over-speeding.

In a statement on Thursday, 22 December, department spokesman Tidimalo Chuene said six drivers had been arrested for the offence since 1 December.

The department is currently running a festive season road safety campaign, focusing on the implementation of traffic law enforcement and road safety promotion plans.

“At least 2 377 drivers were charged and fined for speeding, with six arrested for the offence the beginning of the month. This intensive campaign was encouraged by the need to instil safe road user behaviour and encourage voluntary compliance. It also seeks to increase detection and prosecution of critical road traffic offences,” Chuene said.

He added that all these efforts were aimed at reducing crashes, fatalities and serious injuries. The campaign had already succeeded in getting 221 184 cars stopped and checked, 36 411 weighed, 8 922 drivers tested for alcohol, 19 arrested for drunk driving, 1 476 charged for driving documents, 1 305 charged for car defects, 1 238 charged for overloading passengers and goods while 69 cars were impounded and 42 discontinued.

“Traffic authorities will be strengthening visibility and enforcement in the next few days leading up to the Christmas weekend to ensure safety. Road users are equally expected to play their part by obeying the rules to arrive alive at their destinations,” said Chuene.
