THE circumstances surrounding the death of an off-duty police officer remain a mystery for now.

Police Minister Bheki Cele visited the family of Warrant Officer Lindela Mraqisa, who was killed in Gugulethu in a mass drive-by shooting over the weekend.

He was among five people killed in the shooting on Saturday night, 30 September.

This is the second mass shooting in the area in less than a week.

Speaking to Daily Sun, the brother of the slain cop, Mthobeli Mraqisa said that the family is distraught.

"Lindela was a humble man," Mthobeli said.

Mraqisa (42) served as a close protector to deputy police minister Cassel Mathale since 2019.

Mathale described the late officer as dedicated, humble and hardworking.

"The number of police officers killed on and off duty remains a concern for the leadership of the SAPS. We need the whole of society and government to fight this scourge. Mraqisa was a soft-spoken, dedicated and focused police officer who was always punctual and professional in his conduct. We hope the police will find and bring to book those responsible for his death. My condolences go to his family," Mathale said.

Police reports indicate that four men and a woman were shot and killed when the parked car they were sitting in was shot at.

Three suspects are being sought for this crime, as police piece together valuable clues to make a breakthrough.
