Clocolan police, in the Free State, have arrested six suspects in possession of two firearms and an air gun.
This following a foiled armed robbery on Friday, 23 September.
Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring said police received a tip-off about four unknown males from Welkom who arrived at Extension 6 in Clocolan armed with firearms.
“It is further alleged that the four males were planning to commit business robberies at foreign nationals’ shops. Police followed up the information and activated the local K9 Unit, the detectives and security companies,” Mophiring said in a statement.
He said the house was identified where the suspects were waiting.
“The house was searched and five males from Welkom and Virginia, together with the owner of the house, were found and arrested.
“Police seized two unlicensed firearms and an air gun,” Mophiring added.
He said the firearms will be circulated to establish their origin and further forensic investigation will be conducted.
The six suspects, aged between 32 and 52, will appear before the Clocolan Magistrates Court on Monday, 26 September. The face charges of possession of unlicensed firearms.
