RECOUNTING the traumatic experience of the shooting incident that claimed the lives of Rand Water boss Teboho Joala and his bodyguard Sfiso Shange, Council Chief Whip Sthembiso Zungu described his survival as nothing short of a miracle.
He recalled how one of the shooters told him that he was using muthi and that's why they couldn’t kill him.
Zungu said this was after the shooter ran out of bullets and his gun jammed while he was aiming for his head.
He told Daily Sun that they were ambushed in front of school pupils.

He told the SunTeam that he only saw the shooters approaching the stage and at that time they had already started shooting.
“I just sat down there. It felt like a bad dream that I was going to wake up from. I only stood after I was shot twice in the legs. I kept on asking the shooter, ‘Kwenzenjani’, he then went for my head. It’s a miracle that I survived.
"We were ambushed. I remember telling my protector not to come. I told him I will drive myself to the venue because it’s my ward and I was not expecting anything,” he said.
Despite the ordeal, Zungu affirmed that he is recovering well and feeling strong.
Attending the court proceedings on Monday, 22 April, where three suspects faced charges related to Joala's murder, Zungu said he had mixed emotions.
"Seeing these individuals brought back painful memories... We are hopeful that justice will prevail," he said.
