THE trial of the five men accused of killing Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper, Senzo Meyiwa, is continuing in the North Gauteng High Court on Tuesday, 15 November)
It will resume with the cross-examination of the third state witness and Meyiwa’s childhood friend, Tumelo Madlala, by attorney TT Thobane, the defence lawyer of four of the accused.
On Monday, the court heard that a high-profile person was being protected in this matter. This was according to Thobane, after going through Madlala’s testimony on the events that happened after Meyiwa was gunned down.
Madlala told court that on the night Meyiwa was shot, together with Kelly Khumalo and others, they went to the singer’s apartment that she shared with the deceased. While there, police officers came but Kelly did not open for them. Instead, she called someone and after the call, cops made a U-turn.
Thobane asked Madlala: “A high-profile person is being protected in this. What do you say about?”
Madlala responded: “I don’t know how to answer that but when it is Kelly’s time to come to court, she can answer that question.”
Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, Bongani Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa and Sifisokuhle Ntuli are facing charges of premeditated murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravated circumstances as well as possession of ammunition and firearms without a licence.
They have all pleaded not guilty.
Meyiwa was killed in an alleged botched robbery at the house belonging to the mother of his then girlfriend, Kelly, in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni in October 2014.
