ANGRY residents blocked the R510 road after their homes were allegedly destroyed by the Rustenburg Local Municipality on Wednesday, 22 November.

The residents claimed that they were ready to rebuild their shacks after they were demolished at Tshenolong near Ramochana outside Rustenburg.

It's alleged that the municipality destroyed more than 100 shacks and homes.

Many said they will not move until the municipality allocates them another land, while some said they cannot afford to rebuild their homes.

One of the affected residents, Thomas Mononyone, claimed that they didn't receive any eviction letters or notices.

"We only saw the TLBs in the morning and we didn't get a chance to take our belongings. We're now stranded, some of us can’t afford to rebuild because we don't have jobs," Thomas said.

Another angry resident, Willy Raselo, said his brother had spent about R500 000 on the construction of the house.

"I've been living here with my brother for four years and nothing has been said about us occupying this land illegally. We're devastated and stranded," Willy said.

Another resident, Kagiso Polelo, had just registered to vote and is disappointed with how the government has treated them.

"How are we supposed to vote if we are not taken seriously?" said Kagiso.

Shop owner Victoria Mosika said she lost everything, her stock and money.

"This is how I survive and feed my family. What the municipality has done to us is cruel, she said.

Community leader Jane Mpolokeng said the government has failed her people.

"Our leaders should go down to the community level and talk to them," she said.

Jane said they've been living there for years and have nowhere to go.

Police spokeswoman Captain Aafje Botma confirmed that police cops are still monitoring the situation following the road closure, adding that no arrests have been made.

Rustenburg municipal spokeswoman Boitumelo Mareume said the municipality will issue a statement regarding the situation.
