THE Freedom Park Heritage Site and Museum in Tshwane hosted a wreath-laying and solidarity ceremony on Wednesday, 23 August.

Department of Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Zizi Kodwa and other political figures joined the President of Cuba, Miguel Diaz-Canel, to honour more than 2 000 Cubans who died fighting for humanity and freedom in Southern Africa.

During a walkabout on the wall of names, Diaz-Canel had an opportunity to lay a wreath.

The ANC secretary-general, Fikile Mbalula, welcomed the president of Cuba to Mzansi.

“Our solidarity and friendship with the Cubans is forever. Comrades, we meet here today on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit and are happy to receive the President of Cuba.

“The ANC calls on ANC structures and the alliance to support and encourage South Africans to intensify the humanitarian campaign in support of Cuba through donations of non-perishable food, medicine and clothing,” Mbalula said.

Diaz-Canel thanked Mzansi for the warm welcome on behalf of their people.

“We have been excited to be with you in this impressive ceremony. It is always an honour to be in the land of Nelson Mandela and a huge number of heroes who sacrificed for this country,” he said.

Diaz-Canel said it is overwhelming that this ceremony takes place in Freedom Park.

Mbalula handed over a gift to the Cuban president as a token of appreciation.
