The body of a teenage boy who drowned at Doornkuil dam, south of Joburg, has been found.

A 14-YEAR-OLD boy from Weilers Farm extension 3 near of Orange Farm, south of Joburg, left home to play with his friends on Saturday afternoon, 15 April.

But the grade 8 pupil from Sakhisizwe High School never returned home.

The search began after his friends failed to tell his family members what had happened.

After being questioned, the friends eventually revealed that their friend drowned while they were swimming in a dam.

On Sunday, 16 April, the boy was reported missing at De Deur Police Station.

Police spokeswoman Sargent Gertrude Makhale said on Tuesday, 18 April, cops followed up on information about the missing boy and found some traces at Doornkuil dam.

Makhale said police divers were called to the dam and started a search that eventually led to the boy's body.

“The deceased and his friends had gone swimming at Doornkuil dam and he drowned. His body was recovered on Tuesday afternoon.

“Police have opened an inquest docket,” she said.

Sedibeng cluster acting commissioner Brigadier Mbangwa Nkwashu has pleaded with parents to warn their children against swimming at dams or rivers.

“Kids drown all the time at the dams as nobody knows how deep they are, especially if the ground surface is clay mud, and anyone who has drowned in the clay mud struggles to come out, even if they know how to swim," he said.

Nkwashu also sent his condolences to the family of Samkelo Gadu, who was swept away by heavy rains in Evaton on 11 February, and his body has not yet been found.
