A 35-year-old police constable was shot on duty at the Masilo Satellite Police Station in Theunissen in the Free State.
Three unknown men wearing balaclavas entered the cop shop on Wednesday, 7 June, and shot her.
According to the sources, the gunmen started to fire shots towards the on-duty police officer without saying nor demanding anything.
Cops spokesman Captain Stephen Thakeng said the officer managed to return fire, and the perpetrators fled, but she sustained a gunshot wound on her stomach.
"The member was taken to a hospital. A case of attempted murder has been registered for further investigation Residents are requested to provide information regarding these three African males," he said.

Acting premier of the Free State, Ketso Makume, condemned the incident.
"I promised to meet with the MEC, who is responsible for community safety, to discuss a pathway forward. I want to assure the people they will be safe in their respective communities," he said.
The said officer is fighting for her life in hospital.
