Police Minister Bheki Cele (second from left) was among the mourners at the funeral service of Constable Nosipho Zuma on Saturday.

NOSIPHO Zuma was laid to rest on Saturday, 27 January.

Police Ministe Bheki Cele and national police commissioner Fannie Masemola were among the people who bid farewell to Nosipho who died in the line of duty.

The constable's funeral was held in KZN.

Nosipho was tragically killed on 17 January when a truck crashed into an accident scene she was attending to on the M7 highway.

Speaking at the funeral service Cele emphasised the importance of caring for the bereaved.

"Constable Zuma is one of many police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty, leaving behind husbands, wives, brothers, sisters, loving parents, colleagues, neighbours, friends and most importantly sons and daughters. In the midst of this tragedy, the least we can do is care for the children," Cele said.

Masemola echoed the same sentiments, stating that the death grant for all SAPS members who die on the job has been increased from R250 000 to R300 000 for those in the lower ranks, and who are often on the frontline of police danger.

"It's not good that we pay them when something like this happens. We are not encouraging it, but we are trying to say by all means that we should try to meet the family halfway and comfort them as they go through the difficulties," he said.

The SAPS has lost 140 police officers in the past four years, with 33 members killed in the line of duty since January 2023 to date.
