POLICE are investigating a case of armed robbery after Transport Minister Sindisiwe Lydia Chikunga and two protectors were robbed.

The National Department of Transport's head of communications, Collen Msibi confirmed the incident.

He said the  tyres of the minister’s car were punctured by spikes, bringing the car to a stop and enabling the criminals to rob the occupants of their valuables.

"This incident took place in the early hours of Monday morning, 6 November, when the minister was en route to Pretoria, between N3 Vosloorus and Heidelberg," he said.

Gauteng police spokeswoman Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a robbery that occurred on the N3 between Vosloorus and Heidelberg on Monday, 6 November.

Mathe said personal belongings and two pistols were stolen in the incident.

"The affected members are receiving the necessary support and counselling. Following this unprecedented incident, a manhunt has been launched to bring those responsible for this attack to justice," Mathe said.

She said minister has since been provided with alternative resources.

"The police are committed to execute its mandate to protect the country's executive and the community at large. VIP protection is one of the key priority areas for the police and has been undertaken with excellence over the years," she said.
