JOBURG Mayor Mpho Moerane and City Power unveiled a security plan on Tuesday, 26 October for reliable power supply in the city.
Speaking at the John Ware substation in Fordsburg, Moerane said it was exciting to launch a substation that would be powered by diesel fuel.
He said last week, they concluded a two-year power purchase agreement, which holds 220 megawatts energy capacity for the city.
“On Monday, the city met with Eskom to continue discussions to find common ground on ways to mitigate loadshedding and sought exemption of Jozi from stages one and two of loadshedding,” said Moerane.
He said that launch was meant to unveil the finalised energy sustainability strategy that included solar and gas.
“The most exciting part is that the plan’s execution is set to start by the end off the week with the issuing of public requests for proposals from independent power producers. All these new developments which are geared towards increasing power supply security are not overnight plans for electioneering as some suggest,” he said.
Moerane said these were the results of hard work from men and women who dedicated their time to the municipal power entity.
“I’m pleased that we are executing a 15-year energy sustainability that will see City Power from being an energy distributing company to an energy company,” said Moerane.
He said their long-term goal was to distribute 35% electricity that comes from clean energy by 2030.
