JEPPESTOWN is the murder capital of Gauteng.
In the good old days, visiting relatives and shopping in Joburg suburbia was a luxury for those of us who lived on the outskirts of the city of gold.
Now, it's a crime haven. Gauteng has recorded the highest number of reported serious crimes in the country in the third quarter of 2023, with 116 597 crimes recorded between October and December 2023.
Joburg Central is the most dangerous area in Gauteng for contact crimes - with 1043 reported between October and December 2023. Contact crimes include murder, attempted murder, sexual offences, as well as assault and robbery.
These photos tell a story of what was once a thriving city and has now turned into a terrifying nightmare.

Jeppestown, one of the oldest suburbs in Joburg, is the murder capital of Gauteng. A total of 66 people were murdered on the streets of this small neighbourhood between October and December last year.
Once a thriving pocket for the middle class, it's now filled with dilipidated buildings in desperate need of attention. The Victorian architecture of some of the buildings tell a tale of a bygone era. It ranks third in Gauteng for attempted murder, coming in after Sophiatown and Loate in Tshwane.
