WHEN she heard gunshots, she went outside to check what was happening.
But sadly, she found that her brother had been killed.
So she asked the shooters why they shot her brother.
But they shot her instead of giving her any answers.
The siblings were among 11 people who were shot over chicken feet on Saturday night, 29 October.
Seven people died while four were injured. According to the community of Finetown, south of Joburg, Thabang Motloung (22) sold chicken dust 200m away from his home and he was the target of a robbery. Family member Mmakopano Mokeke told The People’s Paper she received a frantic call at around 9pm from a neighbour telling her what had happened.
“I was shocked as I was with them not long ago. I don’t live with them but they are family and my husband takes care of them since both their parents are deceased.
“We rushed to the scene and upon arrival, we discovered their lifeless bodies lying in a pool of blood in the street just opposite their home,” she said.
Mmakopano said according to information she received from the community, Thabang’s sister Pinky Koose (41) heard gunshots and when she went outside, she found her little brother had been shot and killed. She shouted at the shooters and asked why they had killed her brother. But they shot at her too and the siblings died on the scene.
Mmakopano said the siblings had a passion and love for soccer.
“Pinky coached a girl’s soccer team in the area while Thabang enjoyed playing soccer,” she said.
The family is asking for help to bury their loved ones as Thabang was the breadwinner but didn’t have a funeral cover, while Pinky was unemployed.
Community member Annah Sebogodi said they were tired of the lack of police visibility in their area.
The siblings were not the only people who were shot.
According to Brigadier Brenda Muridili, the death toll which was initially at six had risen to seven after one of the victims who was hospitalised died in hospital on Sunday, 30 October.
Muridili said the provincial police commissioner had mobilised maximum resources to investigate the seven counts of murder and four counts of attempted murder.
“It is reported that about four suspects tried to rob street vendors selling chicken feet.
“The vendors allegedly resisted and threw stones at the suspects, and their vehicle’s rear window was damaged. The suspects drove off and came back on foot armed with firearms. They then shot at the vendors and bystanders, leaving 11 people shot,” she said.

Muridili added that three men and a woman died on the scene while two women died upon arrival in hospital. “Four more men and a woman are being treated for gunshot wounds in hospital,” she said.
Muridili said the Serious and Violent Crimes, Murder and Robbery Unit is following leads to trace the perpetrators. No one has been arrested yet.
