"Preliminary statistics show that pedestrian motor vehicle accidents are topping the charts, and an engagement of this nature was mandatory and necessary.
"Officers visited Chris Hani Play Park to educate children on road safety and how to make use of the pedestrian crossings at all times.
"Furthermore, at the extension 15 taxi rank, situated in the Duduza area, drivers were workshopped on road safety," she said.
Thepa said a stern focus was placed on drivers to be vigilant and always, to be on the lookout for pedestrians, using the roadway when crossing over.
"Drivers were also encouraged, to always exercise caution particularly, at night.
"The EMPD will continue to have such engagements with communities throughout the City of Ekurhuleni to help reduce the number of road accidents and fatalities, this festive season," said Thepa.
