THERE is a lot of gangsterism in high schools in Bekkersdal.

So thugs are using this as an opportunity to rent out knives to pupils who are members of gangs in the schools.

On Wednesday, they were caught red-handed by school patrollers.

Residents told Daily Sun some of these thugs are drop outs from the same schools. These thugs operate outside the school premises and wait for the pupils to go on tea break or lunch.

The Bekkersdal safety patrollers’ leader, Lucky Mosimane, urged residents to work with them to fight drugs and gangsterism in schools.

Resident Nomsa Nogala said parents are relieved to have the group of patrollers waiting to search kids for drugs and dangerous weapons before entering the school premises. Pupils told Daily Sun the thugs saw a chance to make money.

Police spokeswoman Sergeant Linkie Lefakane said two teens were arrested but after interrogating them, they found they were not the suspects they wanted, but that the real suspects fled and left the knives.
