THE suspension of exams at Nqabakazulu High School in KwaMashu, Durban has angered parents.
This after pupils returned home with a letter on Wednesday, 8 November, stating that exams had been put on hold for pupils from grade 8 up to grade 11.
The letter further stated that the exams had been urgently put on hold and parents would be informed should there be any changes. The letter also stated that grade 12s would continue with their exams and wouldn’t be affected.
But this did not sit well with the parents, who called on the KZN Department of Education to urgently intervene.
One of the parents, Khethelo Dlamini, whose child is in grade 9, said he was shocked when his daughter showed him the letter.
“I don’t understand how the school just stops pupils from writing in the middle of exams. Our kids have been studying for these final exams and they are prepared for them. They suddenly have to stop writing,” he said.
Another concerned parent, Thabile Ntshiza said: “This isn’t the right time. They are selfish and don’t care about our children. I heard that the reason behind this is that they want their salaries increased. Apparently their unions are still holding meetings with the department. They should wait for the outcome of the meetings.”

Thabile said they wanted the department to make sure the exams continued as planned.
“This is not fair to our children. Other schools are continuing with exams. This tells us that these teachers don’t care about our children,” she said.
KZN Education spokesman, Muzi Mahlambi said they had met with the unions and were still going to meet with other unions.
“We plan to issue a media statement on Friday, 10 November that will have details of what transpired throughout the week in the meetings with the unions,” said Mahlambi.
Asked if the department was aware of the letter from Nqabakazulu high, Mahlambi didn't respond.
