A MAN has been arrested for allegedly killing his girlfriend during a fight.

According to North West Police spokeswoman Lieutenant-Colonel Amanda Funani, the incident happened at Brakspruit outside Klerksdorp on Sunday, 31 March.

Funani said police arrested a 30-year-old man in connection with the murder of his 25-year-old girlfriend.

"It's alleged that the suspect, the victim, and their friends were sitting together at their friend's place at Brakspruit outside Klerksdorp when a fight ensued," said Funani.

"The victim allegedly assaulted the boyfriend, and the latter retaliated by beating her with fists until she fell down."

Funani said according to reports, the victim was left lying on the floor and the owner of the room attempted to wake her up when he got back but realised that she was not moving.

“He then alerted the friends and the boyfriend. An ambulance and the police were called, and the victim was declared dead at the scene. The 30-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with murder," she said.

Funani said the suspect is expected to appear in the Klerksdorp Magistrates Court soon.

Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena applauded the police for their quick reaction, which led to the suspect's arrest.

He urged members of the community to resolve differences amicably to avoid violent situations like this.
