RESIDENTS of Nomzamo in Orlando West will host a commemoration to remember people who died when gunmen allegedly shot and killed people at the tavern in July 2022.
The event will be on Sunday, 9 July, and there will be a prayer to remember the mass shooting which left 16 people dead at Mdlalose Tavern in Nomzamo Park, Soweto.
The organiser and community leader, Wandile Rafuza, said they would hold a prayer session, and later there would be a candlelight ceremony to remember the 16 people who died.
“The incident left pain and trauma to the community, and we have decided to host the event to remember them.
“Families of the people who died will be part of the event," Rafuza said.
He said sports activities such as netball and soccer will be part of the event.

“We want to ensure the youth is involved in sport.
“We want to elevate the importance of youth sports and the positive impact it has on the emotional and physical wellbeing of the youth,” he added.
Meanwhile, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has dropped charges against six men accused of the mass shooting at Mdlalose Tavern.
In a statement released by NPA spokeswoman Phindi Mjonondwane last month, she said it was concluded that there were no prospects of a successful prosecution.
“As requests for further investigation were not complied with due to witnesses fearing for their lives or witnesses subsequently losing their lives,” she said.
Mjonondwane said that two of the men, Lepolesa Moshoeshoe and Thembinkosi Kiviet, would still be prosecuted for murder charges which are not related to the tavern killings.
