NO alcohol or drunk people will be allowed to swim at Jabula Beach for their own safety.

iSimangaliso Wetland Park offers a unique rural holiday experience away from the big cities, but you are warned not to bring alcohol to the beach.

They warned visitors that they will crack down on lawbreakers and that if you are caught with alcohol, you will not be allowed in some parts of the park.

The park's marketing and brand manager, Thandi Shabalala, said this during the grand opening at the weekend at uMthoma Boardwalk in St Lucia in Mtubatuba, northern KZN.

"This is the busiest time in the park, but we want to ensure that everyone who visits us is safe. Alcohol is not allowed in some parts of the park. We've seen in the past that alcohol has caused danger," Shabalala said.

She said most of their beaches are in protected areas, which means not much is done there, including the installation of shark nets.

"We don’t have nets, so we emphasise that people should come sober to swim so that they follow the instructions of the lifeguards. We want people to come in numbers to enjoy the holidays in our park, which offers almost everything, including boat rides, whale trips, horse rides, wildlife transports and more," Shabalala said.

Visitor Themba Zikode (43) from Richards Bay, northern KZN, said he had decided to go on a short holiday with his family to do various activities and swim in the sea as Richards Bay beach was currently unsafe.

"It's our first time here, but we really like it already. I think I will have to convince my whole family to make this our new home in December. I am looking forward to a game drive and I am sure my children will learn a lot," Themba said.

Another visitor, Lihle Ntombela (19), said she loves coming to Jabula Beach to cool off. She praised the park for ensuring that alcohol consumption is limited because there are no drunk people here to bother her.

"I'm enjoying my December so far and may come back for Christmas and New Year because the park is clean and well-maintained," Lihle said.
