SINCE last month the City of Ekurhuleni has been engaging with residents from areas where emergency workers were attacked.

The engagements, which took place on Sundays, were between city officials and cops. The most recent visit was to Dukathole extension 9 on Sunday.

Services were recently suspended in the area following attacks on emergency crews.

Emergency services disaster spokesman Willam Tladi said: “The community spoke about the importance of emergency services and identified shortfalls after service was suspended. They pleaded with law enforcement units to arrest suspects because they couldn’t live without essential services.”

According to officials, residents committed themselves to identifying those responsible for the attacks.

They said after the engagement, emergency workers told them they felt safer going back to the areas.

The City of Joburg recently started sending Metro police with emergency crews when they attended to high-risk areas.
