IN 1998 they were given back their land. But then the community of Ratsagae, near Moedwil, Swartruggens, said the government abandoned them!

Gadifele Maboe told the People’s Paper that there is no such thing as service delivery at Ratsagae.

They feel totally ignored by Kgetlengrivier Municipality, which is 40km from Rustenburg and 60km from Swartruggens. The area turns into dark city at night because there is no electricity or running water.

Roads are so bad that ambulances can’t get through when it rains. People have to carry coffins to the cemetery.

To access the clinic, cop shop and other government services, people have to go to Swartruggens. To get there, they have to walk 10km to and from the N4 highway. There’s no local school and kids have to board at a Swartruggens farm school.

“They said RDPs would be built here, but nothing’s happened,” said Gadifele.

Human Settlements spokesman Ben Bole said the housing project is still in the planning stage. Department of Education spokesman Elias Malindi said: “An audit is being undertaken to see if there is a need for a school to be built.”
