SINCE the start of the lockdown in 2020, wearing face masks hasbecome the new normal.
But South Africans can now finally breathe a sigh of relief as the regulation has been lifted.
The SunTeam spoke to ordinary South Africans yesterday, 23 June, about how they felt about the news.
Some said they were happy to finally breathe freely while many women said they were excited to show their faces again.
Annah Mosane from Springs, Ekurhuleni, told Daily Sun she was happy to wave the masks goodbye.
She said the masks hid their faces, meaning potential boyfriends would pass by without even greeting them.
“The masks hid our faces and we could not be seen properly. When you met someone, you had to take the mask off to know who it was,” she said.
“With the mask on, someone would just pass you by and not even greet you.”

Thelma Lebaka, also from Springs, said she was happy to be able to breathe properly. She also said masks wiped off her make-up when she put them on.
“The only nice thing was that they protected you when you were next to someone who was coughing,” she said.
Thomas Phokane from Daveyton, Ekurhuleni, said the masks made him sweat.
“These masks made us tired but we must continue to put them on at places like supermarkets,” he said.
Thomas said people should continue protecting themselves because they could still catch the virus.

Mkhonzeni Dlamini from Selcourt said: “I have mixed feelings because the masks also protect us from other airborne diseases.
“We are happy to be given our freedom but from my side, I will continue to wear a mask.”
However, he said he didn’t like the mask when he was running because it made it difficult to breathe.
