A MYSTERIOUS fire ate a family home on Sunday, 3 December, leaving a mother and daughter with only the clothes they were wearing.

Family member Refiloe Mbele (25) from Lakeside in Orange Farm, south of Joburg, told Daily Sun that she thanks her ancestors for waking her up to visit her friend that day before the fire broke out.

She said every day during load shedding she goes to bed with her three-month-old baby and on Sunday, she decided to visit a friend but rushed back home after a neighbour's call.

She said when she got home, she was greeted by the community trying to kill the fire at her house.

The fire apparently started outside from the electricity meter box and quickly spread through the kitchen before burning the entire house.

"Everything was unplugged at the time, and no one was home when the fire started," Refiloe said.

The owner of the house, Phumzile Mbele (59), told the Daily Sun that according to her knowledge, if the fire has been put out but it keeps starting over and over again it’s a sign of vutha.

“It's by the grace of God that my child and my grandchild were not home because during the day they sleep, and that fire could have also burnt them. If it was a normal fire, it would have been put out,” she said.

According to Phumzile, firefighters arrived while the fire was still strong and extinguished it but after they had left, the fire started again.

One of the community members, Alinah Mpandla (45), told Daily Sun that they tried to save the home just as the fire started but failed.

Despite Daily Sun's attempts to inquire with the emergency services department, there has been no response as of Wednesday.
