THE woman heard her neighbour’s babies crying hysterically, so she went to see what was going on.
What she found was as gruesome a scene as anybody can imagine.
The mother had hanged herself in her shack, with her one-year-old twin babies in the same room.
Tembisa South cops spokeswoman Constable Bridget Mavuso told Daily Sun this happened on Wednesday, 23 November, in Vusimuzi Section inside a rented shack.
She said when the police arrived, they found the 36-year-old woman hanging in the shack with the twins, a boy and girl, crying.
“We don’t know what led to her taking her life. Paramedics declared her dead at the scene,” said Mavuso.
The deceased was taken to Germiston mortuary and the children were taken to the police station, and later taken by their father.
The neighbour said she and the dead woman were not close, but she became worried when she heard the children crying and decided to go into the room.
“I’ve never heard her talk about being suicidal. This caught us all off-guard,” said the neighbour. She said she felt sorry for the children, and wished the mother had spoken about whatever was bothering her.
“These kids need their mother. Doing this is front of them makes it even more heartbreaking,” she said.
Mavuso has encouraged the community to come to the police, should they experience problems that they felt were beyond them.
She also urged them to make use of the People Opposing Women Abuse services, where they would get counselling and referral to places that could assist them.
Family members were not ready to talk to the media, and the father was unreachable.
