Police retrieve the body of a man who was allegedly fleeing from an angry mob and drowned.

WHEN a mob tried to catch suspected tsotsis, they allegedly jumped into a river and tried to swim across.

One of the men managed to make it across, while the other one drowned.

This happened on 17 March in Tonga, Mpumalanga, and a search to find his body was initiated.

Cops said the death of the 27-year-old man could have been avoided if people adhered to the call by the police to refrain from mob attacks.

Mpumalanga police spokesman Brigadier Selvy Mohlala confirmed that two men ran away, allegedly from an angry mob and jumped into the Nkomazi River.

"One of the two victims is said to have managed to successfully to swim across the river, while his fellow friend disappeared in the heavy current of the dangerous Nkomazi River on Friday, 17 March 2023," said Mohlala.

Mohlala said his body was spotted by the police's airwing on Wednesday morning, 22 March 2023, about 5km away from where he reportedly drowned.

"After his body was retrieved, paramedics were summoned. He was unfortunately certified dead on the scene. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death, what led to the attack and those involved."
