Seven suspects were arrested in Cambridge in Eastern Cape after a 39-year-old man was assaulted to death by community members on Friday, 23 December.
According to Captain Hazel Mqala, it is alleged that at about 10am, the mother of the deceased was at her shack in Amalinda Forest informal settlement in Cambridge when it was reported to her by her son-in-law that her son was being assaulted in an open space.
“The mother then went to the place where the assault was taking place and came across community members assaulting her son.
“He was being assaulted and burned. The mother was unable to stop the attack,” Mqala said in a statement.
She said when the attack stopped the victim was severely injured and was taken to the hospital for treatment by the paramedics.
Mqala said the victim died on 24 December at about 3pm.
“The mother was able to identify some of the suspects involved in the attack.
“Further investigation was conducted and members managed to arrest the suspects facing charges of murder and possession of the suspected stolen property,” Mqala added.
Six male suspects and a female will appear before a Magistrates’ Court soon.
