THE upcoming Lesotho elections hold the key to unlocking the zama zama link to the Soweto tavern shooting.
Daily Sun has learnt that since the interview with one of the rival groups that provides protection services to zama zamas, cops have been in talks with them to secure suspects believed to be responsible.
A fight between rival groups with origins in Lesotho, Terene ea Chakela and Terene ea Mokata, are aligned to political parties in Lesotho.
It’s said to be the cause of the killings and revenge killings that has led to the loss of innocent lives.
Daily Sun has learnt cops police were in possession of a list of suspects of the Mokata train, whose leaders have approached the paper for help to connect with Police Minister Bheki Cele.
Gauteng police spokeswoman Brigadier Brenda Muridili declined to answer questions, saying: “SAPS is not at liberty to discuss information that forms part of an ongoing probe.”
Gauteng Premier David Makhura told the provincial legislature that police uncovered the suspects in the shooting were in Lesotho.
Mokata secretary Tshepo Moshoeshoe confirmed the people in the list were his members who were based in Lesotho.
“We committed ourselves to work with the police. Our members have nothing to hide. We know that the police don’t have any evidence linking us to the scene of the crime,” he said.
Daily Sun has also seen a document that reveals the Chakela train leader was interviewed in connection with the tavern and admitted in the interrogation that their members were involved.
This is despite people on the wanted list being members of the rival group.
