TWO suspected illegal miners were arrested for murder while 10 others were arrested for assault in Randfontein on Tuesday, 30 August.

Police were conducting an operation on zama zamas when they were notified of an act of vigilantism at Bhongweni in Randfontein.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo said on arrival, police rescued two people who were being assaulted by 10 people who are suspected to be illegal miners.

He said preliminary investigation revealed that the two victims were accused of shooting and killing another illegal miner in the early hours of the morning.

“Police arrested all 12 suspects,” he said.

Masondo said the 12 suspects will also be processed by Home Affairs as they are reported to be undocumented immigrants.

“They are expected to appear in the Randfontein Magistrates Court in due course,” he said.
