THE mob attacks show that the communities have lost confidence in the police.
This is according to Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane, a member of the community safety in the Gauteng legislature.
She was speaking at a briefing on the high crime rate in Diepsloot, Gauteng. The event was also attended by police commissioner Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela, the Joburg district commissioner, Major-General Max Masha, and Diepsloot station commander Brigadier Koena Moichela.
This came after seven people were burnt to death in a mob attack in Diepsloot on 1 December.
Nkosi-Malobane said the same attacks also took place in the informal settlement of Stjwetla in Alexandra.
"They say we are being raped and killed on a daily basis, where you commit a crime, you are killed," she said.
Mawela said that vigilantism was on the rise and warned people against engaging in mob attacks.

"We have to provide stability every day. We have to do something to change the living conditions of the people in this area. It can't be that everything is left to the police to solve the challenges faced by the cops,” Mawela said.
Mawela said only two of the seven killed were identified and were South Africans.
Masha said crime statistics show that 92 people have been killed since March 2023 to April 2023.
This was 22 more than in 2021 during the same period. He further said there were 754 cases of grievous bodily harm during this period.
Masha said they had decreased by 42 people.
