MADIBA'S birthday has only one meaning in Mzansi, to bring back the spirit of ubuntu.

Every year, people in all corners of the country use the 67 minutes to help those in need.

But the mayor of King Cetshwayo district, Thami Ntuli, believes that people do not need to wait for Mandela Day to land a helping hand.

He believes that people should be helped all year round.

Ntuli has been a life saver to most rural schools by donating food parcels since KZN was hit by the school feeding problem earlier this year.

On Mandela Day, he addressed rural schools, which are known for producing the best medical students in KZN.

Ntuli donated food parcels to both Bizimali and Ngono high schools in Nkandla, northern KZN.

He said he thought it appropriate to continue his journey to support children so that teaching and learning can continue undisturbed.

"I am continuing this programme because I believe it is what most schools need right now. As we approach exams, we want our children to excel in their studies. But if they are hungry, there is a good chance they will not be able to concentrate at school," Ntuli said.

Bizimali principal Ntandoyakhe Ntuli thanked the district for the support, which he said will play an important role in helping pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds.

He said that most parents send their children to Bizimali because they want them to succeed in life.

"Our school is like an oasis in the desert, because we are in a not so favourable environment and yet we achieve the best results. Without the support of various sponsors and the dedicated teachers, this would not be possible," said Ntandoyakhe.

Phindile Mfeka (16), a matric pupil, said they're for the mayor's donation.
