IT MIGHT be a bleak Christmas for 12 teachers from Mdluli Secondary School.
This is because their National Senior Certificate markers appointment letters were revoked by the Mpumalanga education department.
The letters were revoked after seven matrics were caught red-handed with notes during their business studies exam at the school in Hluvukani, Mpumalanga.
SGB secretary Hildah Molapo said: “We are gravely disappointed after receiving reports concerning 12 teachers whose appointments were revoked by director of examinations Chukudu Manyabeane due to the violation of clause eight of the appointment rules and regulations.”
She said the decision was made without the teachers even being formally charged.
“They were not made aware of their offences before they could be punished,” she said.

Molapo didn’t deny that pupils were caught with notes but said the teachers were not involved.
The provincial secretary of the South African Democratic Teachers Union, Walter Hlaise said: “We’re aware of the withdrawal of the teachers from marking. We are representing them in the matter.”
Basic education department spokesman Elijah Mhlanga said: “The action taken by the Mpumalanga department was done in the interest of protecting the examination. It does not mean anyone is guilty. It’s a precaution to ensure education is able to continue. We are allowed to do that.”
