NELSON Mandela Bay Municipality is losing the war on illegal dumping.
Kasis in the metro have turned into dumping grounds as there is an illegal dump site at almost every open space.
No matter how many times the municipality clears the rubbish, it takes only hours for the residents to start dumping again.

Member of Mayoral Committee for infrastructure and engineering Thsonono Buyeye said they have a project called War on Waste but are not winning this fight.
“We want to make a plea to communities to know that it is morally wrong to dump rubbish illegally. As the city, we have plans to deal with dumping but that is a fight we can’t win on our own. We need the residents to work with us. The challenge is that dump sites are cleared but a few days later rubbish is back,” he said.
Buyeye said the Public Health Directorate is working on an education and awareness plan.
“We want to discourage communities from dumping illegally and we want toinstil a pride within communities to take control of areas that are cleared.
“We don’t have enough resources to enforce by-laws and personnel to deal with people who are dumping illegally,” said Buyeye.

Resident Ngcwanini Api said: “People are dumping because of the inconsistency of refuse collection. When the municipality rubbish trucks break down, we have no choice but to dump our rubbish in an open field. The municipality must provide wheelie bins.”
